Plot: (Warning, may contain spoilers):
"The List" by Steve Martini, published in 1997, is a legal thriller that sees defense attorney Paul Madriani drawn into a dangerous conspiracy involving a cryptic list and a powerful, hidden network.

The story begins with Benny Murrow, a disbarred and seemingly down-on-his-luck attorney, appearing in Paul Madriani’s office. Murrow claims to be in possession of "the List"—a highly confidential document that he insists contains the names of influential and corrupt individuals involved in a vast, illicit scheme. He hints that this list holds the key to uncovering widespread criminal activity and exposing powerful figures.

However, before Madriani can fully understand the implications of Murrow's claims or the nature of the list, Murrow is brutally murdered. This immediate escalation signals that the information Murrow possessed is indeed lethal, and that the people on "the List" will stop at nothing to keep their secrets buried.

Madriani, initially reluctant to get involved, finds himself inexorably drawn into the investigation. His sense of justice, coupled with the sheer brutality of Murrow's death, compels him to uncover the truth. He quickly realizes he is up against an incredibly powerful and ruthless organization, one that operates beyond the reach of conventional law and has deeply infiltrated various levels of society.

As Madriani delves deeper, he uncovers a complex web of conspiracy involving fraud, blackmail, and murder. The "List" itself proves to be more than just names; it's a blueprint to a vast financial and political network that manipulates markets and exerts control over critical institutions. His investigation leads him into perilous situations, putting his own life and the lives of those close to him at grave risk.

Madriani must use all his legal acumen, his sharp intellect, and his courage to navigate the dangerous landscape of hidden power and corrupt influence. He faces formidable adversaries who operate with impunity, resorting to violence and intimidation to protect their interests.

The novel is a tense, fast-paced legal thriller, filled with intricate plotting and high stakes. The climax sees Madriani piecing together the final elements of the conspiracy and confronting the powerful individuals behind "the List," leading to a dramatic courtroom showdown or a perilous confrontation outside it, where the truth is finally brought to light and justice is desperately sought against overwhelming odds.

Comments:
I read this as it came in a box of 8 paperback books in a gift box. I read it and it was alright but nothing special (to me).
