Published in: 2012

Date read: 2nd October 2022

Score: 3/5

Genre: Fantasy, Supernatural, Historical fiction

Plot: (Warning, may contain spoilers):
"Shadow of Night," the second book in Deborah Harkness's All Souls Trilogy, continues the story of Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont directly after the cliff-hanger ending of "A Discovery of Witches." To escape the powerful creatures pursuing them and to learn more about Diana's burgeoning magic and the elusive Ashmole 782, Diana and Matthew time-travel to Elizabethan London in 1590.

Plunged into a vibrant and dangerous world of spies, intrigue, and historical figures like Christopher Marlowe and Sir Walter Raleigh (who are part of Matthew's old circle, the "School of Night"), Diana must navigate a society deeply suspicious of witches. Their primary goal is to find a witch who can tutor Diana in her increasingly powerful and unpredictable abilities, as well as to seek out clues about Ashmole 782, which they believe holds the key to the future of all magical creatures. As they delve deeper into the past, they uncover more about Matthew's complex history, including his family and the ancient secrets tied to his bloodline. Diana begins to understand the true extent of her unique magical heritage as a "weaver," capable of creating new spells, but the dangers of the era, including witch hunts and the rigid rules of the creature world, constantly threaten their forbidden love and their mission.

Comments:
I enjoyed this one much less as it "got weird". I did enjoy it but not as much as the previous one.
