"Hannibal Rising," published in 2006, serves as a prequel to Thomas Harris's acclaimed Hannibal Lecter series. It delves into the traumatic childhood and formative experiences that shaped Hannibal Lecter into the brilliant, yet utterly monstrous, cannibalistic serial killer seen in the previous novels.
The story begins in Lithuania during World War II. Hannibal Lecter is a privileged and intelligent young boy, living with his beloved younger sister, Mischa, and their aristocratic parents. Their idyllic life is brutally shattered when their family is caught in the brutal crossfire between retreating German forces and advancing Soviet troops. Both parents are killed, leaving Hannibal and Mischa orphaned and vulnerable.
The children seek refuge in their family's remote hunting lodge, but their sanctuary is invaded by a group of depraved and starving Lithuanian Hiwis (former Soviet collaborators turned desperate scavengers). Trapped by heavy snow, the children eventually succumb to starvation. In a horrifying and unspeakable act driven by extreme desperation and the depravity of the Hiwis, Mischa is killed and cannibalized by the men. Young Hannibal is forced to witness this atrocity, and a piece of his humanity dies with her. This pivotal, traumatic event is the genesis of his later psychopathy and his cannibalistic tendencies, not as a choice, but as a deep-seated, horrific imprint.
After the war, Hannibal is sent to an orphanage in his family's former castle, now a Soviet institution, where he endures years of abuse. He eventually escapes and travels to France to live with his aristocratic aunt, Lady Murasaki Shikibu, the widow of his uncle. Under her cultured influence, Hannibal begins his studies, particularly in anatomy and medicine, and develops his refined tastes.
However, beneath the surface of his intellectual pursuits, a cold, calculating rage festers. Driven by the fragmented, haunting memories of Mischa's death, Hannibal embarks on a chilling quest for vengeance against the men who murdered and consumed his sister. He meticulously hunts down each of the surviving Hiwis, often employing methods that reflect the very horror inflicted upon him and Mischa.
The novel details his first murders, his developing skills in forensic science (which he turns to his own dark purposes), and the formation of his signature, unsettling blend of intellectual superiority and chilling depravity. It explores how deep-seated trauma and the thirst for revenge can warp a mind into something truly monstrous. "Hannibal Rising" offers a disturbing, yet compelling, look at the origins of one of fiction's most iconic villains, showing the catalyst for his dark awakening.
Comments:
I almost forgot about this book, it was only while I was writing about the other three that I discovered this one. I found a copy and, low and behold, I had read it and thoroughly enjoyed the insight into what made the monster!
