"Bones" by Jan Burke is a suspenseful thriller and the seventh novel in her Irene Kelly mystery series. The story revolves around the disappearance of Julia Sayre, a young mother of two, which has been a long-standing, personal mission for journalist Irene Kelly.
Four years after Julia vanished without a trace, the man responsible for her death, serial killer Nick Parrish, is now on death row for other heinous acts of torture and murder. In a desperate plea bargain to avoid the death penalty and secure a life sentence, Parrish offers to reveal the location of Julia Sayre's body.
Irene Kelly, having tirelessly covered Julia's disappearance, is drawn into this high-stakes situation. She joins the investigative team, which includes forensic experts and law enforcement, as they embark on a dangerous journey into the remote and isolated Sierra Nevada mountains, with Parrish as their chilling, unreliable guide.
However, Parrish is far from cooperative. He has his own terrifying secrets and an elaborate, sinister plan. It quickly becomes clear that his cooperation is merely a façade for a meticulously orchestrated escape, and his deadly focus soon shifts to a new potential victim: Irene Kelly herself.
Trapped in the wilderness with a cunning and psychopathic killer, Irene must use all her wits and journalistic instincts to survive and ultimately discover what truly happened to Julia Sayre, while also fighting for her own life against a killer obsessed with her. The novel is a tense cat-and-mouse game, exploring themes of justice, obsession, and the dark depths of human cruelty.

I have read this, however, other than giving it a score, I cannot remember it. Apologies to JB.
